Lactarius rufus

Posted by Taylan 11/05/13

Taylan: Growing on ground in coastal conifer forest. Based on the dust layer on the caps, the spores appear to be creamish white.

Dick: Did you do a taste test? There must of been almost no wind to get a spore accumulation like that

Judy: Looks like Lactarius rufus which is a very common conifer association on the coast. Should be very hot and peppery with white latex. When examining Lactarius, always check for latex and the color of it.

Taylan: I didn't taste this particular find because my taste buds were temporarily out of commission after tasting consecutive Russulas.
thank you for the helpful reminder.
