Mike: Found this today and have had trouble figuring it out,
but Arora suggests Caulorhiza umbonata,
which seems to fit.
The rooting stem is the most distinguishing feature,
plus pale, notched gills and fibrillose stem.
I am not sure if it was under redwood (as the species is supposed to be).

If I had found this on the E. coast,
I would have called it Collybia radicata (now moved to genus Xerula).
Opinions of local experts most welcome!
